Dear VVHS Parents/Guardians and Students:


The start of the 2016-2017 school year is right around the corner! Welcome back! We are excited to get things going again, and hope you are too! (If you have received this info in error or your student will not be returning to VVHS this year, please call us right away at 505-890-0343 x 37202 or x 37052. Thank you!)


You should have received the Registration Newsletter ‘Hawks Connection’ in the mail. If not, the newsletter is attached below. Please review it for important registration and start of school information. Here are a few highlighted items:


  • BACK TO SCHOOL CLOTHES! The start of school means reviewing the clothes closet and often getting a new item or two. Please keep the following things in mind when dressing and shopping for school:
    • SLEEVES: All shirts and tops must have sleeves; off-the shoulder doesn’t count!
    • COVERED: All cleavage, backs, bellies and buttocks must be completely covered, at all times. See-through, slit or jacket-style shirts, must have a full-length shirt worn underneath.
    • LENGTH: All shorts, skirts, dresses must be minimum MID-THIGH LENGTH. Full-length pants or jeans are very acceptable and appropriate attire for school (no holes, no frays, no slits)!
    • SHOES: highly recommend close-toed shoes – This is a very large campus on two levels, with a lot of people (approx. 2300 students and 200 staff); sandals and flip-flops are not suitable foot ware to protect feet and to safely navigate the terrain.
  • July 26 EARLY ID DAY
    • ONLY for incoming 9th graders, new VVHS students or anyone who missed their yearbook picture last year.
    • Tuesday, July 26, 10:00-12:00
    • Be in Dress Code
  • August 4, 5 REGISTRATION – let us know if you are not in town for this, so we don’t delete your schedule; call us at 505-890-0343 x 37202 or x 37052:
    • Thursday, August 4, 7:45-11:00 for 12th & 9th graders
    • Friday, August 5, 7:45-11:00 for 11th & 10th graders
    • BRING RESIDENCY VERIFICATION (see newsletter for details).
  • August 10 SOAR DAY
    • ONLY for incoming 9th graders
    • Wednesday, August 10, 7:30-11:00
    • Buses will run; no meals served
    • Fun, games, make new friends, tour the school, meet your teachers
    • Be sure to review the new high school bell schedule for this year (see newsletter); each day is now 7:30a-2:30p.


  • SCHOOL SUPPLIES – While there isn’t a ‘school supply list’ for high schools, there are a few common items for every class that you can plan for. Students will receive class-specific supply lists in the first few days of school for those additional needed supplies. If you need assistance with school supplies, please let your student’s counselor know ASAP so that we can help. Remember to plan for 7 classes, and always arrive to classes well-prepared:
    • LOCK for school locker – May purchase from Parent Advisory fundraiser at Registration for $5. Locks for PE lockers are school-issued by PE teachers; please be aware of $10 fine for lost or damaged PE locks.
    • 3-ring binders, 1½” or 2” are good sizes – will probably need one of these for each core class; electives will vary. Remember, good planning and organization is a good set-up for success.
    • Pocket folders – I recommend getting these with brads, that way you have them if you need them.
    • 3-hole notebook paper, wide rule
    • Spiral notebooks, wide rule & perforated – these single subject jewels come in very handy for note-taking!
    • Pencils, #2 – we have pencil sharpeners in every room; if you use mechanical pencils, be sure to get .7mm or .9mm which don’t break as easily and can be used on bubble sheets.
    • Pens – black, blue, red are most common for use on assignments and marking corrections
    • Color pencils
    • Ruler
    • Tab dividers – If you happen to have manila folders on hand, cutting them down a little and punching holes in them makes great and sturdy dividers!
    • For PE classes (PE, Weights, T&I, Lifetime Sports, Aerobics): MID-THIGH length solid BLACK shorts, sleeved solid BLACK tshirt; no pockets, no logos on either…..shorts & tshirt will be available for purchase at Registration as PE fundraiser, $10 each.
    • OPTIONAL, not a required purchase: Graphing Calculator – TI-NSpire Graphing Calculators are used in all of our math classes; your student will have access to this tool at school. If you already have a TI-84 Graphing Calculator, that’s great! Just be aware that they operate a little bit differently. Students may use either of these calculators on the PARCC assessment in April. If you have Internet access at home, there are free online graphing calculator tools available; just search ‘free online graphing calculator’.
    • OPTIONAL (these are always needed in classrooms, if you can help out with a donation to any of your child’s teachers – THANK YOU, THANK YOU!): box of facial tissue, dry erase markers, anti-bacterial wipes, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes
  • COURSE FEES – Most electives have course fees; check the Course Offering Guide or check with your student’s teachers for details. We hope that ParentVue provides option for payment of Course Fees electronically this year; fees may also be paid via cash or check to classroom teachers, make checks payable to 'Volcano Vista High School'. Work with your student's teachers right away if special payment arrangements are needed.
  • ParentVue/StudentVue – Remember to activate your account again when school starts; see http://www.aps.edu/students-parents/parentvue-studentvue for details to access your student’s classes, attendance, grades, school information, etc.


We are very excited to have everyone back on campus for the new school year! This year we celebrate a special milestone, our 10th year in this community! We are so blessed to be a part of your family and to partner with you in growing the future leaders of our community and our world. Parking Passes will be on sale at registration August 4 and 5, the first week of school at 7am-7:25am (M,W,F) and during lunch. After August 29th they will be on sale Monday mornings before school (7:30) and during lunch. When dance tickets are being sold we will not sell parking passes at lunch.Parking Pass Form may be found online and in the activities office (D107)


In order to appear in the 2017 edition of the yearbook, seniors will need to have their portraits taken at MOJI Studios by October 31, 2016.


Moji website is mojistudios.com.  If they want to book a studio session (Gold or Platinum) please call 255-6424.  If you want to book an express session, you can book online by clicking Express Sessions at our website.


Moji Studios will be on campus July 20th and August 20th for the Express Sessions.
